This absolute stomper dropped on monday morning. Break and Sato have taken a side each on this twelve to bring you a savage vinyl ust in time for Xmas. Framework has been doing the rounds in the dance for a while with dj support from the likes of Spectrasoul, Phace, Teebee, Bailey and more and Sato's Clap your hands jumps on its back to bring you a weighty rolller in case you hadnt had enough after framework.
Symmetry 009 adds another belter to symmetry's growing catalogue of upfront drum and bass. Expect lots more from Break in the new year.
Mindset's newest and youngest singing Troy Gunner releases 3 tracks this month. The release promises great things for Gunner's 2012 as well as a keen ear for vibes and unique samples.
Uk Bass music has developed and expanded over the last year into possibly one of the most exciting musical movements of recent times, stemming from a breakdown of musical boundaries, categorisation and rules. Troy Gunner and the Mindset imprint marches proudly in the midst of this movement into 2012.
Mindset 009 featuring Heads in Hands, Fools Gold and Dancing In The Leaves is out on Vinyl and digital in December 2011.
So lately Example's review column has disappeared, and in the spirit of the age old saying, "If you want something doing, do it yourself" I am going to review releases from now on. However I will warn you I'm not really a fan of these highly descriptive reviews which people take the time to write. Beautiful writing maybe, but a bit pointless when the tunes are embedded right next to the words. I intend to honestly give you a run down of what I've been sent by the music industry and what I have been listening to.
So over the last couple of weeks I have mainly been listening to . . .
Buraka Som Sistema - Komba - Nov 2011
I had heard the name Buraka Som Sistema bandied about for a long time before I actually sat down to give them a listen. Im talking about two years. Before I went to Germany and had my eyes opened to the world of dance music which operates below 170 and 140 BPM artists like Buraka Som Sistema were really lost on me. But thats all changed now and I'm happy to say the new album "Komba" was a favourite for a couple of weeks. If you don't know about them they have quite a unique "ethnic" style mashed together with pure dance floor electric sounds. Stand out tunes for me are "Tira O Pe" and the single "We Stay Up All Night" (mainly because of the video with the fit girls in)
Skittles - DOT2DOT - Estate Recordings - Nov 7th 2011
Of course I'm biased on this one but Dot2Dot has been backed left right and centre over the last couple of weeks with it being voted as number 1 in Mary Anne Hobbs' music response chart, played on Rinse by Alex Nut and even dropped on 1xtra by Charlie Sloth and Mista Jam. The album looks set to go off in early 2012 and the Estate Recs imprint is looking to be one to watch in the future. Check out the video for DOT2DOT below and buy the EP on iTunes …
Mute and Mako - Essential Forms - Mars Recs - Nov 2011
The second release on Psylence's newest imprint and sister of Ingredient's MARS brings two nostalgic tunes from Bristol natives Mute and Mako on a lovely red vinyl. Has been received really well so far this release and definitely one to get in your record bag.
Martyn and Mike Slott - All Nights - ???
A top piece of 130ish business. So good I had to buy it. Not a new tune by any means but as I say I'm only just opening up my eyes to the world of techno and house and Bass Music so Ive got some catching up to do. Check out the tune below . . .
Morphy - EP - Translation Records
American based Translation recs continue their recent foray into half time dub inspired drum and bass with this latest ep from Morphy. A strong release which extends perfectly their new experimental direction. I have to say massive props to translation for daring to go in a direction which isn't necessarily the most popular at the moment but bringing out some great stuff anyway.
Also recommend the Theory EP which came out a couple of months ago.
Damu - Unity -
I got onto the Damu album quite late. Its been absolutely hammered on the blogs over the last couple of months and not without reason. Top album and you have to support the local boys. Personal favourite is the steel pan infused L.O.V.E, which has been a great first tune of the day over the last couple of weeks.
Marcel Dettman - Conducted Mix - Nov 2011
All out techno on this one as you would expect from Berghain resident Marcell Dettman. Great mix taking you to quite a few locations along the techno spectrum. You can catch Marcell on the Sounds Of Berghain lineup at Warehouse on the 16th December. Not a patch on the real Berghain though ;). You can watch this video of Marcell being extremely German and talking about the mix in this video. Surprisingly he did the mix on two decks and a mixer haha.
Nemeck and Tomic - In Deep Blue EP - 2010
A 2010 release featuring 4 beautiful rollers. If such a word can be used for tech house tunes. Not really got much to say about this one other than buy it. Standout track would be Niente which I heard in this video of Fauna playing on a boat in Berlin. 2nd tune in the video.
Mungo's Hi-Fi - Forward Ever - Nov 2011
This album is exactly what you would expect, but not in a bad way. Put it on and within ten seconds your bouncing around your house shouting skengdengdiddleyeng and screaming PULL UP!!! Simple yet effective this one is still in my top listening at the moment after nearly a month. Stand out tracks would be ' Skidip' ft Charley P and 'Computer Age' ft Mr Williams.
Maya Jane Coles - Focus Now EP -
A minimally / housey purchase from me on this one. Focus Now features 4 beautiful laid back beats. Another one I'm late on finding, but if i missed it you might have too. I like all 4 but my favourite would have to be the one below and "Little One". I find the vocals on 'Senseless' a bit corny but apart from that a fantastic EP.
So that's it for whats in my iTunes at the moment. I hope there's something you like in there. More tunes to come soon.
